Each silo can store up to 240 hay. The current amount stored can be checked by interacting with it. Best way is to go silo>coop/barn depending on which one you want to farm animal wise. No one really bothers with the coop queast anyway.

Don't build 2 silos. Once you have your first coop/barn just set a chest inside next to where you get the hay out. When your silo gets filled up to 250 just remove it by hand and place in the chest. Once you have a silo, any grass that's scythed down has a chance of becoming hay and being automatically placed into the silo. Interacting with the silo just shows it's capacity.
