The game will direct you to build a coop early on, but will neglect to inform you that animals need to be fed daily. Before you build either a coop or a barn, build a silo so you can start harvesting hay rather than paying marnie for it. You need a deluxe coop for the auto feeder.

The big coop doesn't have one. Only a fully upgraded barn/coop will automatically use the silo to feed your animals. Otherwise you have to place the hay on the feeder yourself. I see you got the answer already but just a tip.

If your silo is full, and you still have a coop or barn that has not fully been upgraded, you can pull all hay from the hay hopper (in coop or barn) and store that hay in a chest. Then scythe more grass to refill your silo. If your silo ever gets full, completely empty the feeder before cutting the grass. Keep that hay in a chest for emergencies, or during winter. (so for example you'd have 280 in your silos and 500 in a chest somewhere. )
